Ozzy Osbourne was known for his wild stage persona and outrageous rock star antics, but behind the scenes, he had a heart of gold, according to his longtime Black Sabbath band mate, Geezer Butler.
In an essay for The Sunday Times, Butler revealed that in real life, Osbourne was the opposite of his onstage madman persona. “To me, Ozzy wasn’t the Prince of Darkness — if anything, he was the Prince of Laughter. He’d do anything for a laugh, a born entertainer,” Butler wrote.
Describing his band mates as “inseparable brothers in arms” who were “always looking out for each other,” Butler elaborated on Osbourne.
People always thought Ozzy was a feral wild man, but he had a heart of pure gold,” he wrote. “Most of his infamous antics — the bat saga, biting the head off a dove, p—ing on the Alamo, snorting lines of ants, and the rest — came in his solo years, away from the restraints of the Sabbath crew. But if you were a friend in need, Ozzy was always there for you. When my son was born with a heart defect, Ozzy called me every day to see how I was coping, even though we hadn’t spoken for a year.”
Osbourne once addressed his wild rock star persona in a 1991 interview on The Joan Rivers Show. In an episode about rock ’n’ roll dads, the rocker reiterated that he did some things for show. “I can’t understand why people can’t accept the fact that I’m an artist/entertainer,” Osbourne said. “It’s like a clown, a guy that works in a circus. Do you see him walking around in the street with his red nose and his makeup on? I’m just an entertainer. It’s what I do for a living, and I enjoy what I do for a living.”
Fans did get to see the humorous, home life side of Osbourne in his family’s MTV reality show, The Osbournes, in the early 2000s. In a 2007 interview with The Sault Star, Butler noted, “We always used to say, ‘If his music career disappears, he should be a comedian.’ He’s always been a naturally funny person. I
In addition, when Butler first met Osbourne in 1968, the future rock legend had cropped hair and wore mod suits. His look changed over the years as he grew his hair long and began wearing outlandish makeup, black robes, and oversized cross pendants.
